After a big weekend, which saw you using a variety of drugs and enjoying a few drinks to boot, you’re ready for another week of work. But before you head off, you get out your secret weapon — the mouthwash you purchased after Googling ‘Can you beat saliva drug testing?’
After a quick swig, faithfully following the directions, it’s in the car and off to work. There’s no roadside drug testing to worry about on the way, and the traffic is light. Before you know it, you’re in the car park, chatting about the weekend’s footy with mates on the worksite.
The morning goes smoothly. You do your best to do as little as possible, as you’re still feeling a little worse for wear. A bite to eat at lunch, then another quick swig of the mouthwash, just in case. And lucky you did — because you’re hit with random workplace saliva drug testing straight after lunch.
No problems, you think, as you’re asked to provide a sample. You paid good money for the mouthwash and you’re confident it’s going to work…
Before you’re hit with the bad news.
You record a positive drug test and are soon being led into the boss’s office.
Why “quick fixes” don’t work
Despite what online ads, forums, or word-of-mouth might suggest, there is no reliable way to “beat” a saliva drug test.
Products marketed as detox solutions or masking agents — including mouthwashes, gums, and sprays — are not scientifically proven to consistently prevent detection. In many cases, modern testing devices are designed to detect tampering or simply bypass these short-term masking attempts.
Saliva drug testing technology has improved significantly in recent years. It is designed to detect the presence of drugs in oral fluid, not just residue in the mouth. That means even if a product temporarily alters the mouth environment, it won’t remove the drug from your system.
In short, these so-called solutions are often nothing more than expensive guesswork.
So, how do you pass a saliva drug test?
As we’ve mentioned in our blog before (see How can you pass workplace drug testing), there are really only two ways to pass saliva drug testing:
- Don’t take drugs at all. This is the safest and most reliable option — not just for passing a test, but for your overall health and workplace safety.
- Allow enough time between use and testing. If someone does choose to use drugs, they must ensure they are not working or driving for an appropriate period afterwards.
How long do drugs stay detectable in saliva?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer isn’t always simple.
Detection times can vary depending on several factors, including:
- The type of drug used
- The quantity taken
- Frequency of use
- Individual metabolism
- Hydration and general health
As a general guide, most drugs can be detected in saliva for 24 to 48 hours after use. However, this is only a guideline — and in some cases, detection windows can be longer. If there is any doubt, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and allow extra time. Cutting it fine is a risk that simply isn’t worth taking, particularly in safety-sensitive workplaces.
The workplace risks are real
Trying to “beat” a drug test isn’t just ineffective — it can also have serious consequences.
A positive result can lead to:
- Removal from site
- Disciplinary action
- Loss of employment
- Damage to professional reputation
More importantly, attending work under the influence or while impaired increases the risk of incidents and injuries — not just for the individual, but for everyone on site. Workplace drug and alcohol policies are in place to protect people, not to catch them out. Attempting to get around these systems undermines that safety.
Don’t waste your money
And as for searching ‘Can you beat saliva drug testing?’ — save your effort and your money.
There is no shortcut, no guaranteed trick, and no miracle product.
Time is the only thing that works.
