A positive roadside drug testing result would normally be enough to have most people facing a fine and license suspension, but the consequences in a recent case in Tasmania are likely to be much greater.
The incident occurred when, as reported by the Pulse Media Group, an Ulverstone motorcyclist flew past police at speeds of around 200km/h. This incident occurred on the Bass Highway. To make matters worse, when Tasmania Police stopped the motorcycle rider and conducted drug testing, a positive result was returned.
“This is extremely concerning behaviour which placed not only the motorcycle rider but other road users at significant risk of serious injury or death,” Acting Inspector Craig Harvey of Western Road Policing Services said.
“We know that speeding and driving under the influence of illicit substances form part of the ‘Fatal Five’ which are known to contribute to serious and fatal crashes.”
The motorcycle has been seized and the rider will face court in Tasmania in coming months.
Acting Inspector Harvey added that Tasmanians can expect an increased presence of police on the roads over the summer holiday period and anyone who gets caught breaking the road rules will face significant consequences. This increased presence is likely to include addition drug testing and alcohol testing.
