Across Tasmania, police roadside drug and alcohol testing continues to highlight a serious and ongoing issue. That is, despite clear laws, education and enforcement, people are still getting behind the wheel after consuming drugs and alcohol.
Recent reporting from Pulse Tasmania has highlighted just three incidents that would leave most commonsense people shaking their heads.
The first involved a 32-year-old Devonport woman who attempted to avoid an alcohol test by pulling into a bottle shop. No, that’s not a joke! Police were waiting and subsequent alcohol testing resulted in an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.201, more than four times the legal limit. She will face court soon.
In another case, a 19-year-old was caught performing a burnout directly in front of a marked police car in Upper Burnie. While that stunt was – dare we say – silly, to make matters worse, Tasmania Police will allege that drug testing of the driver was positive. His vehicle was confiscated for 28 days.
Police also remanded a 46-year-old Devonport man in custody after allegedly fleeing police. He now faces multiple charges, including drug possession and reckless driving. His vehicle was confiscated indefinitely.
The three incidents were all recorded between January 6 and 11, across Tasmania’s north-west in an operation to detect a range of serious driving offences.
During the same operation, police detected 18 people who failed drug testing. Other drivers returned high blood alcohol readings, attempted to evade police, or were caught speeding well above the limit.
Acting Inspector for Tasmania Police, Luke Negri, summed up the behaviour of drivers who take risks.
“If you choose to drive while affected by alcohol or illicit drugs or attempt to evade police, you are making a deliberate and intentional decision to put lives at risk,” he said. “The message is simple – if you break the law, expect to be caught.”
The connection between the road and the workplace
Roadside drug and alcohol testing in Tasmania focuses on public safety. Meanwhile, workplace testing focuses on the same goal, just in a different environment.
The behaviours detected during roadside testing do not occur in isolation. Alcohol and drug use does not switch off when someone parks their car and walks into work. Fatigue, impaired judgement, slower reaction times, and poor decision-making caused by drug and alcohol use follow people into the workplace.
For safety-sensitive industries, this creates real risk. Transport, construction, manufacturing, mining, agriculture, aviation, and marine operations all rely on alert and capable workers.
This is why drug and alcohol testing in Tasmania is a vital safety tool. It’s not about punishment. It is about prevention, education, and risk reduction.
Why reactive approaches are not enough
Many businesses only think about testing after an incident. By then, the damage may already be done. A near miss, a serious injury, significant equipment damage, or reputational harm can all follow.
Roadside drug and alcohol testing shows what happens when enforcement is visible and consistent. People are caught because testing is random and unavoidable. Workplaces that rely only on trust or informal policies often miss early warning signs.
A clear drug and alcohol program helps businesses identify issues before they escalate. It also sends a strong message that safety matters.
