Hair drug testing: When not to use it

Published
Using hair drug testing, hair can tell a lot about a person’s drug use. But it won’t show whether a person has used drugs or alcohol recently.

You may wonder why a provider of hair drug testing services would write a post on when not to use it. It might seem counterproductive, but there’s a good reason.

Hair drug testing is a powerful tool, but it isn’t right for every situation. Treating it as a direct alternative to other testing methods is not a rational approach. For example, it doesn’t suit post-incident or reasonable suspicion testing. It simply doesn’t make sense.

Understanding why is key to building a more effective drug and alcohol program.

The myth: Hair testing is just another option

At first glance, it’s easy to see why people think hair drug testing is simply another method. Urine, saliva and hair testing all detect drug use. So, it seems logical that they do the same job — just in different ways.

But the key difference lies in what they detect and when.

Hair drug testing is not designed to replace other methods. It is designed to deliver a completely different type of insight. In particularly, hair testing provides a long-term view of drug use.

Instead of detecting recent consumption, it identifies patterns of use over weeks or even months. This makes it particularly useful for identifying ongoing or habitual drug use.

Urine and saliva testing, on the other hand, are better suited to detecting recent or current impairment.

Because of this, hair testing should be seen as a complementary tool, not a substitute.

When hair testing is the wrong choice

If an employer treats hair testing as a direct replacement for other methods, they may miss critical risks.

Hair testing is not suitable for:

In these situations, urine or saliva testing is the better option. We recommend saliva drug testing as it’s the best available option for detecting whether someone is under the influence.

When hair testing is the right choice

Hair testing becomes extremely valuable when used in the right context. For example:

  •       Pre-employment screening for high risk roles, such as in transport, construction, and mining industries
  •       Legal and custody matters where a court-admissible history of use is required
  •       Personal or voluntary assurance testing to provide independent evidence of drug history.
  •       High-risk role suitability assessments for licensing or compliance, such as in aviation and maritime roles.

Myth-busting: Common misunderstandings about hair testing

The idea that hair drug testing is just an “alternative” often comes from other misconceptions. For example:

  •       “People can beat a hair test by shaving their head”. Alternative collection sites, such as body hair, can often be used.
  •       “Hair treatments like bleaching will hide drug use”. While treatments may affect concentrations, modern testing methods are designed to detect drug metabolites reliably.
  •       “Hair testing gives immediate results”. Hair testing has a detection delay. It typically reflects drug use from around 7 to 10 days prior.

These misunderstandings highlight why hair testing must be used correctly as part of a broader strategy.

A smarter approach to workplace testing

The most effective drug and alcohol programs don’t rely on a single testing method. They use a combination of tools to cover both recent use and long-term patterns.

For example:

  •       Saliva testing for quick, on-site detection to determine a person’s ability to work safely. Alternatively, some organisations use urine testing to detect recent drug use
  •       Hair testing for long-term behaviour

This layered approach provides a clearer, more complete picture of risk.
