Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing in Australia: Everything you need to know

Hiring new staff. If you work in an industry where safety is paramount, don’t overlook the importance of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.

When it comes to creating a safe and productive workplace, one key tool that many employers find vital is pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. In Australia, this type of screening is becoming increasingly common in safety-sensitive industries, helping employers make informed hiring decisions and build a safer working environment from day one.

What is pre-employment drug and alcohol testing?

Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing involves screening job candidates for the presence of drugs or alcohol before they’re officially hired. Additionally, it can be used following promotion. The aim is straightforward: to ensure that the people joining a workforce are fit for duty and do not pose a risk to themselves, their colleagues, or the public due to substance use.

Unlike random, post-incident or under suspicion testing, pre-employment testing is conducted as part of the recruitment process. It is typically administered once a job offer has been made but before the person has started work. The offer is sometimes conditional on the individual returning a negative result.

This type of testing plays a key role in risk management. It can help reduce the likelihood of workplace accidents, improve productivity and ensure compliance with workplace policies and industry regulations.

Common methods of testing

In Australia, there are several methods used to conduct pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. Each has its advantages and may be selected depending on the employer’s needs and policies.

  1. Saliva testing

Saliva drug testing is non-invasive, fast and suitable for detecting recent drug use, particularly within the past 24–48 hours. It’s one of the most common methods used in workplace settings.

  1. Urine testing

Urine drug testing detects substances over a longer detection window than saliva tests. Depending on the substance, urine testing can detect drug use from the past few days to over a week.

  1. Hair testing

Hair drug testing offers the longest detection window, often identifying drug use from the past 90 days or more. While it’s not typically used for day-to-day workplace testing due to cost and turnaround time, it can be valuable for roles where a long-term drug history is relevant.

  1. Breath testing

Breath testing, using a breathalyser, is used to determine a person’s blood alcohol concentration.

Substances commonly screened in pre-employment drug and alcohol testing

The aim of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing is to detect the use of substances that could impair judgment, slow reaction times or increase the risk of accidents at work.

Common substances targeted include:

  • Cannabis (THC)
  • Amphetamines, including methamphetamine (ice or speed)
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates, such as codeine and heroin
  • MDMA or ecstasy
  • Alcohol

It’s worth noting that while some of these substances may be legally prescribed or legally available, they can still pose a risk if misused or not disclosed appropriately in a safety-sensitive role.

Who uses pre-employment drug and alcohol testing in Australia?

In Australia, pre-employment testing is not mandated across all industries. Instead, it’s typically reserved for sectors where safety is paramount. These include industries like aviation, construction, transportation, maritime, mining and resources, manufacturing, warehousing and logistics.

In these sectors, the consequences of hiring an individual who is unfit for duty due to drug or alcohol use can be significant, making pre-employment testing a critical tool.
