Flashing blue lights, a dark night and imposing police officers might be what you picture when you think about drug testing in Queensland. But in reality, it’s not quite like this.
In this article, we’ll look at what happens inside a roadside drug testing operation in Queensland. We’ll also explore how police use advanced technology such as the Dräger DrugTest 5000. In addition, we will see how workplace drug testing is conducted by Integrity Sampling, using, in some cases, the same equipment.
Like on the roadside the process is efficient and reliable, but flashing blue lights aren’t required!
Inside a Roadside Drug Testing Operation in Queensland
Roadside drug testing is a common sight across Queensland. In fact, tens of thousands of tests are carried out each year. Police carry out these operations to reduce the risk of accidents caused by drivers under the influence of drugs. The setup may look serious, but the drug testing process itself is straightforward and designed to be as smooth as possible.
Testing begins when a driver is stopped because police suspect they may be under the influence, after involvement in a crash, or at a random testing station. Drivers are screened for four common drugs:
- Cannabis
- Methamphetamine
- Cocaine
- Ecstasy
The first stage is a quick and involves a simple tongue swab while the driver is in their car. This test is designed to detect the potential presence of these drugs within a minute or two.
If the swab shows a positive reading, further testing takes place either at the roadside or at a police station. Another saliva sample is collected, and this sample is divided into two parts:
- Immediate analysis using the Dräger DrugTest 5000 – This advanced unit provides an accurate and reliable result in just a few minutes.
- Laboratory confirmation – The second sample is sent to Queensland Health Forensic and Scientific Services for thorough analysis.
The Dräger DrugTest 5000 is the same advanced technology used by Integrity Sampling for some of its workplace testing. The device is portable, accurate, and trusted by law enforcement across Queensland and the world.
If the Dräger test returns a positive result, the driver receives an automatic 24-hour licence suspension as a safety measure. This ensures the person does not continue to drive while under the influence.
Prosecution may begin immediately at the roadside, or later once laboratory results confirm the presence of drugs. This careful, two-step process ensures accuracy while also protecting the rights of drivers.
Inside Workplace Drug Testing in Queensland
While roadside operations get plenty of attention, drug testing in Queensland workplaces is just as important. Employers have a duty of care to provide a safe working environment, and drug and alcohol testing is one way to meet that responsibility.
Thanks to technology such as the Dräger DrugTest 5000 and the DrugCheck 3000, workplace drug testing is quick, accurate, and minimally disruptive.
Here’s how the Dräger DrugTest 5000 process works:
- The person being tested uses a small collection device, which they place in their mouth and rub under their tongue and around their gums.
- The process takes about 30 to 60 seconds.
- The device is then inserted into the analysing unit, which tests for a range of drugs that can affect a person’s ability to work safely.
- Results appear quickly on the unit’s screen.
The DrugCheck 3000 is just as straightforward:
- The person collects a saliva sample by rubbing the device under their tongue and around their cheeks.
- The device is placed into the test kit.
- The kit is shaken, a security tab removed, and the sampler pushed down.
- Results are available within 2–3 minutes. Up to seven different types of drugs can be detected.
Both the DrugTest 5000 and the DrugCheck 3000 are incredibly accurate. However, if a non-negative result is recorded, confirmation testing is always performed. This involves taking another saliva sample, which is then sent to an independent NATA-accredited lab for precise analysis.
Workplace Drug Testing in Queensland, Anywhere, Anytime
One of the key advantages of saliva drug testing and the two Dräger devices are that workplace testing can be carried out efficiently and easily, anywhere, anytime, and without lengthy downtime.
Just like roadside drug testing in Queensland, workplace testing is about safety. Impairment on the job can have serious consequences, particularly in industries involving machinery, driving, or high-risk tasks.
By testing, employers reduce risks and create safer conditions for everyone. Testing also acts as a deterrent. Knowing that testing is in place encourages workers to think twice about turning up under the influence. Over time, this helps build a stronger safety culture in the workplace.
