Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity around the world due to its accuracy and extended detection window. However, that hasn’t stopped myths about the testing method flourishing, causing confusion and misinformation.

In this blog, we will debunk some of the most common myths about hair follicle drug testing. Once you’ve read this content, if you’re asked to undergo testing in the future, you’ll have clear information and know what to expect.

7 myths about hair follicle drug testing

Myth 1: A large section of hair is required for testing

One of the most prevalent myths is that a large section of hair is needed to conduct hair follicle drug testing. In reality, only a small sample is required. Typically, about 3 centimetres of hair, cut close to the scalp, is sufficient for testing. This sample usually consists of around 100 to 120 strands of hair, which is approximately the diameter of a pencil. The sample size is small enough that it does not create noticeable bald spots, making the process discreet and non-invasive.

Myth 2: Hair must be pulled out by the roots

Getting your hair pulled out by the roots can be painful, but rest assured that this is not required for hair follicle drug testing. Hair is taken close to the scalp or body and not pulled out. The process is quick and painless. The cut hair is then analysed for drug metabolites, which are deposited into the hair shaft from the bloodstream. This method ensures that the testing is both effective and comfortable for the individual.

Myth 3: Hair follicle drug testing can indicate drug use for many years

Some people believe that hair follicle drug testing can detect drug use for several years. In practice, however, testing typically covers a detection window of up to 90 days. This is because hair grows at an average rate of around 1.25 centimetres per month and laboratories usually analyse around 3 centimetres of the most recent hair growth closest to the scalp. While theoretically it is possible to test longer hair for an extended detection window, most standard tests do not go beyond the 90-day period.

Myth 4: Hair follicle testing is invasive and painful

As mentioned earlier, hair follicle drug testing is a simple and non-invasive procedure. It only requires cutting a small section of hair, not pulling it out by the roots. The process is quick, taking only a few minutes, and is painless. This makes it a preferable option for people who want a reliable and non-intrusive testing method with a long window of detection.

Myth 5: Hair treatments can alter the test results

There’s also a belief that hair treatments like dyeing, bleaching or using styling products can affect the results of a hair follicle drug test. While it is true that some treatments can impact the hair’s external structure, drug metabolites are embedded inside the hair shaft. Therefore, standard hair treatments generally do not interfere with the ability to detect drugs in the hair. Extreme chemical treatments may reduce the concentration of drug metabolites slightly, but not to the extent that it would completely mask drug use.

Myth 6: Only head hair can be tested

While head hair is the most common sample for hair follicle drug testing and is the preferred option, it is not the only choice. In cases where an individual has little or no hair on their head, body hair can be used as an alternative.

Myth 7: Hair follicle drug testing is too expensive

Another myth is that hair follicle drug testing is prohibitively expensive compared to other testing methods. While it is true that hair testing can be more costly than urine or saliva tests, the benefits can outweigh the cost. Hair follicle testing provides a longer detection window, is harder to cheat and offers highly accurate results.

Test with Integrity

Hair follicle drug testing is a reliable and effective method for detecting drug use over a longer period, compared with urine and saliva drug testing. It can be used for several reasons. These include employment testing, forensic and legal testing, medical testing and drug rehabilitation programs.

Integrity Sampling now offers a hair follicle drug testing service. We can detect over 60 drugs, including alcohol, opiates, stimulations, hypnotics, cannabinoids, anabolic steroids and designer drugs.
