Saliva Drug Testing What is saliva drug testing?

Until recently, the most common method of drug testing in the workplace has been via blood or urine. Both these procedures are intrusive and can cause disruption within the workplace. As a result of this, many businesses have elected not to implement drug and alcohol testing as part of their Occupational Health & Safety program.

Fortunately, new technology is now available that can speed up the drug and alcohol testing process, resulting in minimal "down time" for employees. Saliva (also known as oral fluid) drug testing requires only a small sample of saliva to identify the recent use of drugs, avoiding the need for urine collection devices or needles.

What are the advantages of saliva drug testing?

  • It is easy and non-intrusive.
  • It provides accurate results within minutes.
  • It identifies recent exposure to drugs in contrast to urine, which shows a history of drug use.
  • Observed sample collections eliminates the risk of samples being diluted, substituted or adulterated.
  • The testing process is straightforward and can be conducted at the employees place of employment, causing minimal disruption in the workplace.
  • Laboratory confirmation of presumptive positive results are conducted on the saliva sample, avoiding the need for employees to provide a separate urine or blood sample for analysis.

Testing How are the drug tests conducted?

The testing process is conducted by an accredited Integrity Sampling™ technician using a mouth swab to collect a saliva sample that is analysed by the Cozart drug detection systems.
